Knitting for a warmer winter

Cash donations are probably the most convenient way for an organisation to take care of its corporate social responsibility – but members of the Spoor & Fisher team like to add a human touch.

KasCare is a charity that focuses on bringing a little warmth and comfort to children in need in South Africa. “Kas” is derived from the organisation’s primary project – Knit A Square – and it creates an opportunity for crafters to use their knitting and crocheting skills to create blankets, hand-warmers, beanies and toys. In January 2016 Spoor & Fisher’s keen crafters noticed an appeal for beanies and hand-warmers on the KasCare website and just eight weeks later the ladies had produced 400 pairs of hand-warmers and 100 beanies. A hundred toys were purchased and added to the first delivery followed by a further 140 beanies, 280 pairs of hand-warmers and 200 toys in August. These were delivered together with 90 blankets to Kascare. Over 800 kilograms of wool and more than 5 000 hours of knitting went into this effort – warming hearts along with little heads, fingers and toes.
